Every patient has a unique experience when it comes to the All-on-6 dental implant process because dentists personalize the steps to meet the patient’s precise treatment needs and goals. However, the steps typically include these five steps, although additional steps may be included.
The first thing that the dentist may do during an All-on-6 consultation is order dental X-rays to be done. They can also conduct an oral examination on the same visit. After reviewing the X-rays and oral examination, the dentist can make a treatment recommendation and explain any preparation procedures that the patient needs before the placement of the six dental implants. For example, patients with bone loss may need a bone graft procedure.
Once the mouth is fully prepared, then the dentist can schedule the procedure for the placement of the six dental implants. This could be either in office or with an oral surgeon. The procedure is considered a minor surgery but complications are rare. During the placement procedure, the dental professional pre-determines the best areas for the six implants based on which area has the most healthy jawbone. They can then make incisions to access the bone and drill tiny holes into the jaw to fix the implants into place. The dentist may place temporary teeth while the mouth heals from the placement procedure.
There may be discomfort for the first few days after the placement of the dental implants, but the discomfort can typically be managed with pain relief medication and taking precautions not to disturb the implant sites (e.g., eating a soft diet). It can take several months for the implants to fuse with the jawbone. Once the implants properly fuse and the patient’s mouth heals, then the second placement procedure is scheduled.
The last step in the process is the placement of the permanent teeth. This procedure is far less invasive than the placement of the dental implants. The dentist simply attaches the abutments to the implants and then places the All-on-6 row of teeth, which is typically in the form of a permanent, non-removable complete denture. The patient can return home with their new and beautiful smile after the procedure.
